Civic Roots: Building a Culture of Participation

Stronger Communities Start at the Ballot

The journey toward full participation in American democracy hasn’t been easy—and it hasn’t always been equal. For many communities, the path to the ballot box has been shaped by obstacles that make civic engagement more difficult to access or navigate.

In the U.S. Territories—including the U.S. Virgin Islands—residents face additional limitations. Although they are American citizens, they do not vote for president and have limited roles in federal decision-making. These challenges highlight the importance of civic education and participation at all levels of government.

Civic Roots is where our commitment to inclusive, nonpartisan voter engagement meets the lived experience of those often left out of national conversations. Through education, outreach, and leadership training, Community Action NOW!is helping more people understand their rights, access information, and take part in shaping their communities.

Why Civic Participation Matters

Voting is one of the most effective ways to influence the decisions that affect everyday life—from education and healthcare to housing and disaster response. When people understand how public systems work, they can engage them more confidently and effectively.

That’s why CAN leads initiatives such as:
